I think that core knowledge, or the common bits of culture we all share to make a community, is key.

I'd like to see families be able to assess the fit of a school--whether it teaches three classes at a time or six, whether parents choose uniforms, things outside the curriculum itself, decided on a school-by-school basis. If a school wants to be open from 7-5, let families decide if that's what they want.

But I have yet to hear a way to get the special interests to sit at the table for the greater good of the schools themselves. Why can't parents as consumers vote with our feet, or are we?
